Fit & Quality
Wig Sizes
Topper Sizes
Measure the area of hair loss from side-to-side and front-to-back. Add 1 inch to each measurement to ensure you have enough hair to clip the topper to your head.
How do I measure my head for a wig / topper?
You need six measurements to get the most accurate size. Some people will be in between sizes, and then it is preference. Some like their wigs snug and others prefer them looser.
How do you measure hair length?
Our pieces are always measured with the curls in their natural state (NOT pulled straight). We do this differently from other companies in order to give you the most accurate measurements for how you wear your hair, since curly hair shrinks and dries differently.
Measurements are taken with the tape measure starting at the center part of your head, and going down the side to the ends. Keep your head straight and forward. Have someone help you to get an accurate length on the sides. For the back, start at the crown of the head and go to the ends in the back.

Do you measure the density of your pieces?
Hair Density is an unregulated measurement. It varies from company to company, and therefore the percentages do not hold any value for my purposes. I describe the pieces as light, medium, and high density.
Light: general coverage for top of head, ends are thinner. This adds coverage on top mostly.
Medium: Covers top and ends of hair but your hair can be seen under the piece on bottom if blended.
High: Full density, much heavier in weight. Not realistic
Where is your hair sourced from? Do you use synthetic hair?
Tousled Hair uses ONLY 100% human hair sourced from ethical vendors. We have two types of human hair that we use.
1. Unprocessed / "virgin" curly hair - this hair is naturally curly and will always dry with this texture. The hair has never been processed, unless coloring was done, which will be stated in the description. This hair is generally Slavic/european hair, but sometimes the curlier pieces may be true brazilian hair. This hair will last you several years with proper care and maintenance.
2. Permed curls - this hair is asian hair ("brazilian texture"). It is either steam permed or chemically permed, and will state in the description. This hair will generally last 1-2 years with proper care and maintenance, although the curls may start to loosen around 6 months. The less the piece is washed, the longer the curls and hair integrity will last.
We NEVER use synthetic hair.
How do I secure my piece on my head?
Toppers and Wigs come with combs and clips already on the inside. Many people find they like these and don't need to alter the caps in any way.
Wig/Topper Grips: This is a velvet headband that you wear under your piece instead of or in addition to clips. It keeps the wig from sliding, while avoiding the traction alopecia that can occur with clips. It is also great for those with especially sensitive scalps, or those with no hair at all.
Barbers velcro: People buy these in strips on amazon and either sew them into their caps (permanent), or weave it into the clips (temporary). This is great for those with hair but who have sensitive scalps or don't like to use clips.
Style & Care
How often should I wash my hair piece?
You really should wash your piece as little as possible! Shampoo and water will dry out the hair, even if sulfate-free shampoo is used. This is because they strips the natural oils, and there is no natural replenishment like bio hair (oils from the scalp). Conditioner and hair oils will add a layer of hydration, but only temporarily.
I recommend washing a piece only when it is dirty and smelly. Dirty means it feels gross, like theres a residue on it or the hair doesn't move smoothly anymore. Smelly means when you put it close to your face, the cap actually SMELLS. If it doesn't smell, and the curls only seem to have loosened, you should refresh the piece by gently wetting it to reactivate the gel or mousse that is in the hair already.

While there are many questions that have been asked and topics that can be discussed, other brands and people have given explanations that I think are very informative. I will share links to those resources here for beginners to learn more and to help anyone who has questions about cap type, washing and styling, and how to wear your piece.

How do I refresh the curls without washing?
I recommend gently spraying or wetting down your piece while it is on a wig head. Then comb it with a wide tooth comb if it is knotted or frizzy. Scrunch a small amount just to reactivate the curls, and let it dry.

What products do you recommend?
Any product that is sulfate and silicone free is good! Sometimes silicones work for your hair, and so you should use it if the hair responds well to it. Products are trial and error for all hair as every hair type reacts differently. Start slow and don't invest in too many products in the beginning.
I personally like the brands:
- Eva NYC
- Curlsmith
- Curls blueberry bliss (drug store)
- Not Your Mother's
- Living Proof
- Amika
- Christophe Robin
Can I heat style my piece? Will the curls come back?
Yes! You can definitely straighten or blow dry your piece. Your curls will return when you wet the hair.
Word of caution: if you like to wear your hair straight a lot, I would recommend purchasing a second piece which is straight to alternate with your curly piece. While the curls will return just like your bio hair, the more heat styling you do, the more damage it will cause the hair and the looser the curls will become over time. It will also dry the hair out quicker and shorten the lifespan of your piece if done often enough.
What is the best way to store my wig / topper?
I recommend on a wig head/ wig stand. If you wear it daily, then that is fine, if you wear it less often, either store it in a silk wig bag (provided with your purchase!) or place a silk scarf over the wig head to keep the hair from drying out and getting dusty.
Do you have any tips to care for my piece daily / weekly?
Here are the most crutial tips I tell all of my customers and friends:
1. Always place your wig back on a stand when you take it off. Never throw it on a table or leave it lying around - this will cause tangling and shorten the lifespan of the wig since you will need to comb and manipulate it more.
2. At the end of the day, use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to gently comb out any tangles at the nape of the wig or on your piece. You can lightly spray with water to reactive the curls.
3. 1-2 times per week, use a natural hair oil to moisturize the hair. Spray a tiny amount into your hands, rub your hands together, and gently smooth your hands over the mid-lengths and ends. This will keep the hair moisturized which will ensure it's longevity. Just like any textile, hair will dry out over time if not cared for properly, which will cause it to become brittle and break.
4. When resetting or stylign your wig, touch it as little as possible! This will help contain any frizz. Remember: the more you touch, the more the hair frizzes and tangles.
5. Always use a leave in conditioner. Then use any product you like. Err on the side of caution and use less product. You can always add more, but too much will cause the hair to feel sticky or rough.
6. Never put conditioner on your lace top/ lace front - it will loosen the knots and cause the hair to shed more quickly.
